Lighten Up

Lighting can have a dramatic impact on any space. Not only do the fixtures themselves act as decorative elements in a room, but the light effects how you use the space.

Take some time to look at the rooms in your home at different times of the day and make notes of what you see. Are there dark corners? Is there a good place to read and relax? Can you adjust the light as needed?

Tripod Floor Lamp

Pay close attention to the sources of light. Ideally you should have different lighting sources that can be adjusted based on what you are doing in the room and the time of day.

Overhead lighting cast light down into the room. Table lamps direct light up and down from table height. Standing lamps act as task lighting and can warm up a dark areas. Wall sconces are an excellent way to wash walls with light.

And if you have artwork, consider ceiling cans with directional lighting, or more traditional art lamps to highlight your collection.

A pouf is technically a small ottoman or floor pillow. And design-wise one of the most practical and versatile accents you can add to a room. They work in a kids room with a low table for art & crafts and even homework. Use them in pairs and you gain even more flexibility.
